Above the “BMC” Boston Medical Center, there is a green organic garden that feeds patients, staff and the poor people.
Boston Medical Center is an academic non-profit medical center that has 567 beds. BMC (Boston Medical Center) is the largest hospital and they collaborate with the Boston University School of Medicine. The medical center is based in Boston, Massachusetts.
There is a farm at the rooftop on BMC. The farm has 2,658 square meters. The total area of the garden is 7,000 square meters.
It is created by hundreds of volunteers and led by Dave Maffeo (Senior director of support services) and Robert Biggio (Senior vice president of facilities and support services).
Dave has worked with Lindsay Allen, who manages the BMC Roof Farm and with John Stoddard of Higher Ground Farm.
The farm was managed by Somerville from Recover Green Roofs and Higher Ground Farm.
In the garden, there are various herbs, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, pumpkin, cucumbers, cabbage, carrots, beans, and so on. They are grown on organic soil in recycled milk crates and pollinated with bees.
They provide housing for bees in an uninhabited part of town.
The garden isolates the building, reducing cooling and heating costs and absorbing rain. However, the most important benefit from this is the food produced for those who need it the most – from 5,000 to 7,000 pounds a year.
“The food is medicine. That is why we are doing what we are doing.” Say David Maffeo – hospital’s senior director of support services.
Lindsey Allen farm manager, manages a composting system to carry fertilized soil and intersperses various crops to ward off pests and attract beneficial bugs. Allen sees the garden as an ecosystem that is very useful.
Boston Medical Center serves to low-income patients and the elderly. Provides free food to low-income families, and offers cooking lessons and gardening.
President of Health’s Social Determinants “ProMedia” – Kate Sommerfeld says that about 50% of future health depends on non-clinical factors, including food. Food provided in health care homes must have a high nutritional value. Most of the urban environments are food deserts. It is so hard to get locally grown food and Maffeo thinks that it’s something that they owe to the patients and to the community.
